Acolytes, Chalice Ministers, Sub-Deacons, and Lay Readers
Worship is the heart of our community life. Lay servers help to make it possible for the congregation to draw closer to God each week. By participating in this way one gains a greater understanding of our worship and why we do what we do. We need volunteers to serve in this ministry on Sunday mornings at both services. Lay Readers read the lessons during the Liturgy of the Word. Acolytes, Chalice Ministers and Sub-Deacons are part of the altar party. They wear vestments and process with the clergy during the opening and closing hymn. Among their duties are carrying the cross and torches in the processions, assisting the clergy in the preparation of the table for the Eucharist, and administering the chalice during the distribution of communion.
Training for altar servers is offered from time to time, and written descriptions have been prepared for each role. In addition, the Sub-Deacon will assist new servers in carrying out their ministries. Chalice Ministers and Sub-Deacons are licensed by the diocese.
