FROM STONES TO BREAD: Encountering
Christ in Arid Places Lent begins with the story of Jesus’ experience in the desert. After forty days and nights of fasting, he is famished, and is enticed by the devil to use his power to turn stones into bread. Jesus resists, noting that true sustenance comes, not from the bread that feeds the body, but by the Word of God that feeds the soul. In times of busyness, our souls can suffer from chronic spiritual starvation and a thirst that only God can quench. The Lenten experience invites us to enter a spiritual desert that opens us to an encounter with Christ rather succumbing to the temptations towards busyness.
