As we enter this new year, it is a time of reflection upon what has been and what is to come. For some, this is a time of making resolutions, for others, it is a time of perhaps giving thanks, mourning, rejoicing or gladly saying goodbye to what has been with a deep hope for the future. Lately, I have been trying simply to wake up, take a deep breath, and say a prayer of thanks for this bright beautiful life we have been given. You know, as well as I do, that our world is filled with great blessing and goodness, as well as uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. Whether it is national headlines or local news of another act of gun violence in our community; whether it is the celebration of the birth of a child or the arrival of a dear loved one; whether it is the latest diagnosis or the hard-fought rehabilitation—life is full of change, newness and the unknown. Amidst all of this, it is good for us to remember the bedrock of the good news we have in Jesus, which we will hear this Sunday—The Baptism of our Lord. It is a day when we will welcome two new children into the Body of Christ through baptism, and we will hear in Scripture the foundation of who we are: “You are my child, in whom I am well pleased.” You are beloved. You are loved. Let this truth rest in your heart this new year, surround you in the coming days, and fill your heart with joy. God loves you, I cherish you—together, we are the beloved of God.
