Kickoff Sunday, Picnic, Backpack Blessing

This coming Sunday, August 18th, will be our Kickoff Sunday and Blessing of the Backpacks. We launch our program year together as the school year begins again. After the 10am service we will gather for an all-parish picnic and celebration. We will have games, a bounce house and ministry fair. It’s a wonderful time to meet new friends and share a bit of your story. This year, as last, we have a Pie Bake-off, so plan now to get out that secret family recipe, bake a pie and enter it in this fun and informal contest—even if you didn’t sign up! The main course, dessert, and beverages will be provided. We ask that you simply bring a side dish to share. Food can be dropped off in the Parish Hall before the services.

As we begin the new program year, it is a joyous opportunity to come together, celebrate our common life, and build up our fellowship through song, laughter, fun and worship. If you’ve heard the gospel stories of Jesus, you know that Jesus was given to taking time with friends, his disciples, and complete strangers, to share a meal, conversation and yes, have some fun. Our common life together is about breaking bread, serving our neighbors, giving our lives to God and one another, and building community so that we might learn to live our lives in relationship and not isolation. So, join the fun this Sunday as we begin our program year and invite a friend! This Sunday is a great time to bring a neighbor or someone who might be hungry for community and a free meal. Come and sit a spell with one another; learn a new name; introduce yourself; eat some good food and all the while, know that we are strengthening the ties that bind us together as Christ’s body in this place. I’m looking forward to it.

And don’t forget to bring your backpack, briefcase, or lunchbox—young and old alike. Blessing of the Backpacks happens at both services.

See you Sunday,

Fr. Nick
